The Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tennessee,
became a two-time host of the EWGA Championship Finals on September 7 -
8, 2007. Mike Eller, the owner of
Hermitage Golf Course and his Director of Golf, Jim Vernon, along with their staff
welcomed all EWGA members, guests and staff with the very best of southern hospitality.
In keeping with tradition, the Championship week opened with a rules meeting
presented by EWGA Committee member and USGA Rules Official, Nancy Stringer (Dayton,
OH Chapter). A southern style welcome
reception was held next for all the players and their guests who enjoyed live
music performed by some of Nashville's finest songwriters.
The first round of competition was on Friday and the weather stayed
cooperative. In the Championship
flight, Melissa Holland from the Central Arkansas Chapter found herself in the
lead with a great score of 77 on the Hermitage's General's Retreat course. Also with a five shot lead in the Scramble
division was the Madison, Wisconsin scramble team who returned as the two-time defending champions
since their win in 2005 at the EWGA Championship
at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, Michigan.
New this year was that players competed on the same course for both rounds.
Championship and First flights, as well as the Scramble teams, played the General's
Retreat Course and the Second, Third and Fourth flight competitors played the
President's reserve course. For this reason, Saturday's final round presented
hopes of improvement for those who didn't play to their expectations on Friday.
Improve is exactly what the 2007 EWGA Championship Medalist did in
her Final round at the Hermitage Golf Course.
Melissa Holland shot a magnificent score of 72 which brought her two-day
total to 149, five over par for the Championship!
She was a very happy and gracious winner and credited the EWGA for her
successes as an Executive with Alltel Corporation. Additionally, the Madison,
WI Scramble team of Shelly Armstrong, Sarah Dekraay, Ginger Zimmerman and Terri
Redmond proceeded to defend their title and became a three-time Champion, winning
with a two-day net score of 129 (63-66).

Commitment of a EWGA Leader:
by Stephanie
Jennings, Director of Golf Programs and EWGA Championship Director
This
is my personal and very sincere thank you on behalf of the EWGA staff and Championship
Committee who greatly appreciate the invaluable Association volunteers who go above and beyond.
Each and every year, EWGA members unselfishly devote their time to the
myriad of tasks and events, whether at a Chapter, Section, or Association-wide
level. This devotion of time and talent may seem thankless at times, but
generates great self-worth and accomplishment and is the heart of the EWGA.
In regards to the EWGA Championship Finals, one Chapter Leader, in particular,
sacrificed an entire week of work and hours in the weeks leading up to the Championship
Finals to orchestrate more than 100 volunteers from Wednesday, September 5th
through Saturday, September 8th. This Chapter Leader was Kim Crowder, the Handicap Chair for
the Middle Tennessee Chapter.
Without Kim, the EWGA Championship Committee and EWGA Staff would not
have been able to have such a successful event.
Her dedication to scheduling, educating, and communicating with the volunteers
was admired and appreciated by all involved with the 2007 EWGA Championship.
From the late nights of
organizing spotters to the early mornings of setting up registration before sunrise,
Kim was there, ready and willing to assist in any way. I truly respect her
commitment to our Championship and the Association and am honored that I was able
to work side-by-side with a woman like Kim who, in every way, represents what
the EWGA is all about: Professionalism, Organization and, most of all, Camaraderie.
