PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Let me tell you a story!
At 28 years old, (1978) she decided to take golf lessons after her husband said she was “too” old to learn to play golf. (Typical man trying to keep ladies off the golf course). She took a 6 week course 34 years ago just to be able to go onto a golf course. She joined a 9 hole golf league at Two Rivers Golf Course and met some of the nicest ladies. Well, being in the airline business, it became impossible to schedule her golf, children activities and husbands needs; so she just played periodically; being happy just to hit the ball and getting outside.
This lady looked all over Nashville in 2006 to join a ladies golf league; just to get involved in playing golf in her retirement. She couldn’t find one that fit her needs. She was introduce to the EWGA of Middle Tn though a co-worker and it was one of the best experiences of her life.
The first year, she played one round and just was not really committed; didn’t return. The second year, she decided that this time in her life was for her (after raising 2 children; may I say the best in the world) and wanting more than cleaning house and doing errands for everyone. She committed to being more involved and started playing with the group every opportunity that she could.
Never playing in any kind of golf tournament, she signed up for the Chapter Championship, just to learn more and stay involved! Being in the last flight, never dreaming to win………..she won her flight!
Since then, she’s been in numerous tournaments and places she would have never dreamed to travel to with such a fun group. She’s come from a 35+ handicap to a 17.0 handicap (her goal was to say “I’m a bogey golfer”).
When she was asked several years ago to help out on the board and be the Treasurer; she said you are asking the wrong person! But with encouragement, she learned how to use Quick Books and keep up with the Financials of the chapter. After that, she was voted as Vice President and then this year as President!
I am just stating all these facts for those of you that think you can’t improve or can’t work at a particular position! If I can, so can you. Being a volunteer is one of the most important factors to a successful chapter. It’s something that can bring satisfaction and can fit into your life. The best thing about this is that you learn all the members names and recognize them when you play with them.
I had to put it on hold for several years, but now I can commit to it. Same as many of you, you’ll have to just stay active until you have the time to commit. Staying active is the best thing in golf.
Oh, yes, I have beaten my husband several times on the golf course; then again, he’s not retired and I’m sure when he can play more often, he’ll beat me again!!
